Carol Cooke was told her life would never be the same after being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 37.

That prediction was true.

What nobody could predict was who she would become.

In this conversation, Carol shares her journey from diagnosis to Paralympic gold medallist, advocate, and founder of initiatives that have helped thousands of people living with MS. More importantly, she reflects on what happens when life changes unexpectedly and how we learn to separate what has happened to us from who we are.

What’s Brewing in This Episode

How much of our future is shaped by the stories we are given?

When life changes suddenly, it is easy to believe the first story that follows. A diagnosis becomes a destiny. A setback becomes a limitation. A difficult season becomes the lens through which we see ourselves.

This conversation explores what happens when we refuse to let one chapter become the whole book.

Together, Andrea and Carol explore living with an invisible illness, the assumptions people make about what they cannot see, and the importance of remaining connected to purpose, possibility, and community even when life takes an unexpected turn.

At its heart, this is a conversation about identity, compassion, and the danger of reducing ourselves or others to a single label.

Guest Bio

Carol Cooke is a Paralympic gold medallist, Multiple Sclerosis advocate, author, and speaker. Originally from Canada, she served as an undercover police officer before moving to Australia, where a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis in 1998 changed the direction of her life.

Rather than allowing the diagnosis to define her, Carol went on to become a three-time Paralympian and one of Australia’s most accomplished para-cyclists. Beyond sport, she is the founder of the 24-Hour Mega Swim, an initiative that has raised millions of dollars to support people living with MS.

Carol is passionate about helping people realise that it is never too late to pursue a goal, embrace a new chapter, or discover what remains possible.

Brew the Change

This week’s Brew the Change invitation is simple:

Pause before judging someone whose struggle you cannot see.

We rarely know the full story of the person standing in front of us. Illness, grief, fear, exhaustion, responsibility, and uncertainty often remain hidden beneath the surface.

This week, when you find yourself making an assumption about someone, pause for a moment. Consider what you may not know. Leave room for curiosity before certainty.

Small moments of compassion have a way of changing conversations, relationships, and communities.
