One Day. One Invitation. Endless Possibilities.

Chocolate and Coffee Day for Religious Harmony began in 2015 with a simple idea: what if sharing chocolate, coffee and conversation could help bring people together across religious and cultural differences?

Inspired by the compassion shown through the #IWillRideWithYou movement following the Sydney Lindt Café siege in December 2014, the day was created as an invitation to reach beyond fear, prejudice and division.

Every year on 15 December, we encourage people to connect with someone whose beliefs, culture or life experiences may be different from their own.

You don’t need to organise a big event or do anything extraordinary. It can begin with one simple invitation:

“Would you like to share a chocolate and coffee break?”

Whether it’s between neighbours, colleagues, friends or people meeting for the first time, every conversation is an opportunity to discover what we share as human beings.

And while 15 December is our special day, the invitation doesn’t end there. Chocolate and Coffee Breaks can happen any day, anywhere.

What Is Chocolate and Coffee Day?

Chocolate and Coffee Day for Religious Harmony is celebrated on 15 December each year. It’s an invitation to bring people together across religious, cultural and other differences through something as simple as sharing chocolate, coffee and conversation.

It’s not about changing anyone’s beliefs or convincing others to agree with us. It’s about getting to know one another, challenging assumptions and discovering the humanity we share.

It’s an opportunity to:

  • Reach out to someone from a different faith or cultural background.

  • Listen to stories and experiences different from your own.

  • Ask questions with curiosity and respect.

  • Discover what we have in common while respecting our differences.

  • Build friendships, understanding and a greater sense of belonging.

You can celebrate with one other person, invite neighbours around for coffee, bring colleagues together at work or organise a gathering in your community.

There is no single way to participate. What matters is the willingness to reach beyond our differences and make a genuine human connection.

How Can You Celebrate Chocolate and Coffee Day?

You don’t need to organise a big event to take part. Some of the most meaningful connections begin with a simple invitation.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate on 15 December:

  • Invite someone from a different faith or cultural background to share chocolate, coffee and conversation.

  • Reach out to a neighbour or someone you don’t usually spend time with.

  • Bring colleagues together for a Chocolate and Coffee Day morning tea.

  • Encourage your school, workplace or community group to celebrate the day.

  • Organise a gathering where people from different backgrounds can meet and share their stories.

  • Invite friends and family to join you in reaching beyond their usual circles.

Whether you connect with one person or bring a whole community together, you can help build greater understanding, acceptance and belonging.

And remember, you don’t have to wait until 15 December. Every day is an opportunity to share a Chocolate and Coffee Break.

From One Day to Every Day

What began in 2015 as Chocolate and Coffee Day for Religious Harmony has grown into a wider movement for compassion, belonging and human connection.

While 15 December remains a special day to celebrate religious harmony, the invitation has expanded beyond religion and beyond a single day.

Because every one of us has a story, and our differences should never prevent us from recognising each other’s humanity.

Today, that same spirit continues through Chocolate and Coffee Breaks happening any day, anywhere, and through the television program Chocolate and Coffee Break: A Compassionate Proposition, where people from different backgrounds and life experiences come together to share honest conversations.

The invitation remains as simple as it was in the beginning: share chocolate, coffee and conversation, and discover the person beyond the differences.
