A Chocolate and Coffee Break with Savannah Hauk
How well do we really know the people around us? We might work alongside someone for years, share family celebrations or see them regularly in our community, yet remain unaware of an important part of their life. Sometimes what we don’t know is something they’ve been afraid to reveal.
Savannah Hauk understands that experience. As a lifelong crossdresser who lives as both Savannah and Chuck, she spent much of her life wondering how people would respond if they knew this part of her identity. Growing up in an environment where difference could attract ridicule, she learned early that being herself might come at the cost of acceptance.
In this episode of Chocolate and Coffee Break: A Compassionate Proposition, Savannah joins Andrea Putting to explore what it means to be seen, the courage involved in sharing parts of ourselves that others may not understand, and the relationships that can be affected when we feel we must hide.
But the conversation reaches beyond Savannah’s personal experience. She shares how her own journey has shaped the compassion she extends to strangers, recognising that a person’s behaviour in one moment cannot tell us everything about who they are. We rarely know what someone is carrying, what they’ve experienced or what lies beneath the impression they give us.
It’s an invitation to reconsider the labels we place on people and to approach those whose lives are different from ours with greater curiosity.
Brew the Change: Go Beyond Your Assumptions
This week, start a conversation with someone whose life experiences are different from yours. Ask a genuine question that invites them to share something about themselves, and listen without trying to fit their answer into what you already believe.
You don’t need to agree on everything or understand every aspect of another person’s life to discover something meaningful about them.
