Belonging is often treated as something people find, but this conversation asks whether belonging is actually something we create for one another.

In this episode of Chocolate & Coffee Break: A Compassionate Proposition, Andrea Putting sits down with Khatija Halabi to explore identity, migration, storytelling, hearing, participation, and the small acts of welcome that help people feel they have a place.

What’s Brewing in This Episode

Khatija’s story opens a deeper question about what it takes for people to feel that they belong. From growing up in South Africa to building a life in regional Australia, she reflects on the ways identity, culture, and community shape how people experience welcome.

The conversation also moves into the power of storytelling. When people hear someone’s story directly, assumptions begin to soften. Difference becomes less abstract, and the person in front of us becomes harder to dismiss.

As an audiologist, Khatija also brings a powerful perspective on hearing loss and isolation. When people struggle to hear, they can slowly withdraw from conversations, workplaces, and communities. The issue is not only sound. It is participation, dignity, and the ability to contribute fully to life.

At the heart of this episode is the idea of a soft landing: the simple but profound act of helping someone feel they are not alone when they enter a new place, a new community, or a new season of life.

Brew the Change Challenge

This week’s Brew the Change is to create a soft landing for someone.

Notice who might be standing on the edge. It may be a new neighbour, a quiet colleague, someone navigating change, or someone who simply has not been fully heard.

Offer one small act of belonging. An invitation. A conversation. An introduction. A simple reminder that there is room for them.

Belonging is not accidental. It is something we help create for one another.
